Smoothies – The healthy alternative to soft drinks

Soft drinks are the beverage of choice for millions of people, Nigerians inclusive. It is a well-known knowledge that soft drinks are unhealthy, yet this knowledge has not deterred people from patronizing them probably because it is easily available and affordable.

It is pertinent to know that sugary drinks increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic conditions.It is not enough to point out a problem, an alternative has to be proffered. Hence the introduction of smoothies.

A smoothie is a thick beverage made from blended raw fruit or vegetables with other ingredients as desired by the user. Unlike fruit juices, smoothies involve blending of whole fruits without addition of preservatives and other additives hence it contains all its nutritional value. It is also important to note that smoothies also contain fiber from fruits that assist in digestion thus adding to its nutritional content. Some also include vegetables and spices like ginger for more nutritional value.

The beauty of smoothies lies in its variety; there is an endless combination of fruits to suit your taste! So next time you find yourself reaching for a soft drink, remember you owe it to your body to take care of it and think of a banana smoothie, pineapple smoothie or even strawberry smoothie for a change and your body will thank you!
